Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: \u201cWho am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?\u201d . . . \u201cHow great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.\u201d 2 Samuel 7:18,22<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Happy Thanksgiving! That phrase will be said millions of times today in America. But stop and think: if you say, \u201cHappy Thanksgiving!\u2019 today, what are you actually saying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHave a good time giving thanks today!\u201d That\u2019s perhaps the most literal meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or perhaps you mean, \u201cHave a happy day of being off work, a happy holiday!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or, \u201cEnjoy all the food today\u2014and don\u2019t let that turkey put you right to sleep!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or perhaps, \u201cHave a great time with your loved ones today!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s the common denominator there? The person\u2019s action: enjoy, have a good time, a great day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And let\u2019s be clear: there\u2019s nothing wrong with that. But there\u2019s an even better part of Thanksgiving for the Christian. It\u2019s more than ThanksGIVING\u2014it\u2019s about the giver himself. And I don\u2019t merely mean, \u201cIf you\u2019re a Christian, you get to direct your thanks to someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No\u2014Christians get to sit in the love and blessing of the Sovereign (in control of all things) Lord. They get to say like David, \u201cWow, Lord\u2014who am I, that you\u2019ve blessed me so much?\u201d (By the way, David was the king\u2014he was definitely someone).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Christian gets to say, \u201cThere is no God like you, no God but you\u2014the God who\u2019s taken me, a nobody, and made me a somebody you\u2019ve adopted me into your royal family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What a great day this is\u2014maybe you\u2019ll enjoy food, maybe friends and family, maybe a day off of work. But there\u2019s no maybe about this: God has brought you this far and promises to bring you all the way to eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
