On October 31, some parts of the world celebrate Halloween. For many Christians, though, it is Reformation Day, when we remember the Protestant Reformation and the day in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses. On this day, we thank God that we are saved by grace alone. We take comfort in knowing that our righteousness comes from God alone, not from anything we have done. Christians throughout the ages, including Martin Luther, have found this comfort by reading God’s Word: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9) This Reformation Day, may you rejoice in the free gift of salvation that is yours in Christ!
